The blood brain barrier (BBB) plays a role in preventing glutamate from entering the brain. But the area of the brain that regulates weight control, which is destroyed by consumption of large amounts of free glutamate (as found in MSG and hydrolyzed protein products), lies outside of the BBB. And, therefore, the BBB has little or no effect on keeping glutamate from causing brain damage followed by obesity.
